Museums in Rotterdam

The Boijmans van Beuningen Museum is the biggest museum in Rotterdam on medieval to modern art. There are paintings of artists like Dali, Magritte, Monet, Rembrandt and Van Gogh on display in the permanent collection. The Kunsthal Rotterdam in exhibition centre with over 3300 m2 of exhibition space, enough to fit the 25 different exhibitions a year on varying themes and art forms.


The Netherlands Architecture Institute is located in the Museumpark and offers a fantastic insight in contemporary and modern architecture. The building of NAi is worth a visit alone.


The Maritiem Museum Rotterdam has an impressive collection of over half a million maritime objects, from blueprints and ship models, to furniture and atlases. There is also an all-year round exhibition for children. A reconstruction in progress of the 63 meters long battleship De Delft can be visited at the museum/shipyard De Delft.

Other things to do in Rotterdam

Every year in January Rotterdam hosts the International Film Festival Rotterdam. In August there is an outdoor cinema, the Pleinbioscoop. During the summer there are several festivals in Rotterdam, including the FFWD Heineken Dance Parade, the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Summer Carnival, Bavaria City Racing Event, Volvo Ocean Race, Rotterdam World Port Days and Rotterdam Marathon.


In 2010 the Gran Depart of the Tour de France will take place in Rotterdam.


Feijenoord is the best performing soccer team of the three teams of Rotterdam. Their stadium, called De Kuip seats over 50.000 visitors and is the main location in Rotterdam for some of the country’s biggest concerts, together with Ahoy Rotterdam.


Rotterdam has various shopping areas. Most well known are the Coolsingel, Hoogstraat, Lijnbaan and shopping mall Plaza. The shops in the centre of Rotterdam are open 7 days a week and stay open late on Friday nights. You can always take a daytrip to any city in the Netherlands. The bordering province Zeeland is famous for its fresh seafood, especially mussels and oysters.
